The setup
A bomb destroys the Chinese Mission in New York. Within minutes, before any real investigation, Taiwanese terrorists are blamed. Washington goes to high alert, Beijing starts moving, and the machinery that can pull two nuclear powers toward each other begins turning on its own.
Dan Reilly isn’t buying it. The hotel executive turned State Department freelancer has spent four books learning what a manufactured crisis looks like from the inside, and this one is wearing its fingerprints in plain sight. His doubts reach the Oval Office at the exact moment the pressure to act becomes nearly impossible to resist. Working quietly with a Chinese operative, Reilly has hours, not weeks, to stop two governments from making a mistake neither can reverse.
Underneath it all, in the part of the story no one in the room can see, the Russian president is running a second play with North Korea’s supreme leader, one lifted almost straight from the Cuban Missile Crisis. Whether the two threats are connected, and how, drives the novel. It takes Reilly from the United States to Hong Kong and Taiwan, and finally to Colombia.
Why this installment is different
For four books the center of gravity in this series has been Moscow. Nicolai Gorshkov has been the reliable antagonist, and part of the pleasure has been watching Reilly learn to read that particular adversary.
Red Alert shifts the theater to the Pacific without resetting the protagonist. That’s a harder move than it sounds, and it’s exactly what a continuing series has to prove it can do. The Russian thread doesn’t disappear. It slides sideways into an alliance that lets the same adversary operate where the reader isn’t looking. Taiwan, Hong Kong, the Korean peninsula, a mission bombing on American soil. This is the flashpoint map both the genre and the news are currently fixed on.
Cutting the Red Alert book trailer
The risk with a book this fast is that a trailer becomes a simple slideshow of crises. Bomb, alert, aircraft, map, repeat. It holds attention for about fifteen seconds, then the audience checks out, because escalation without a person inside it is just noise.
So we built this one around the phone call. The spine of the cut is Reilly on the line from Bangkok, hearing what happened in New York, and the moment the conversation turns from a hotel security problem into something far worse. Everything else hangs off that: the news footage, the alert graphics, the walk through the parking garage. All of it answers a question a character actually asked.
The payoff lands as a question and an answer. What’s the plan. DEFCON 1. Prevent World War Three. Held in that order, with room to breathe between them, so the last line reads as a mission statement rather than a tagline.
The rest was restraint. No weapon imagery, both a platform decision and a better instinct, because the real threat in this book is a decision being made in a room, not a gun. The end card enters fully assembled and holds. The audio never gets cut mid-line, because a trailer that clips its own dialogue tells the viewer nobody cared.
